As of 2004 - For youth enrolled
for six months in the YTEC Academy:
Our evaluation over six years has found that:
- Drug use is reduced by 94% on average for youth enrolled in YTEC
for six months or longer.
- Youth who complete the program significantly
reduce their level of re-arrest at 12 and 18 months following
treatment.
For youth enrolled for six months in the YTEC Academy:
- Grade Point Averages increase for 98% of students (by 1.35 points
on average);
- reading scores improve for 74% (by an average 1.7 grade levels);
- school absences decrease by 72% per student per semester.
Of 28 recent YTEC treatment program graduates, 10 are enrolled
in college and 10 are still in high school.
Our participants’ performances reinforce our conviction that
given access to a holistic, service-rich environment and support,
young people who have been dismissed by other systems can succeed
academically, vocationally and socially. Since the program’s
inception in 1997, the program has been undeniably successful in reconnecting
young people with education.
To strengthen the transition between the YTEC Academy and institutions
of higher learning, YTEC has developed relationships with the University
of San Francisco and San Francisco State University and is currently
exploring the multiple opportunities for learning across systems.
The San Francisco Unified School District recently awarded YTEC a
grant through the Secondary Schools Redesign Initiative to engage
in the planning necessary to extend and adapt the YTEC Academy to
benefit up to 100 students. YTEC has been the subject of best practice
reports and documentary films, and its graduates are featured presenters
at juvenile justice, education, and youth development conferences
across the country. |
